After Placement of Dental Implants

A doctor is always available 24 hours per day should you have any questions or concerns please call our office

Bleeding

Some bleeding or redness in the saliva is normal for 24 hours. Excessive bleeding (your mouth fills rapidly with blood) most often is controlled by biting on a gauze pad placed directly on the surgical site for 15 minutes. If bleeding continues, please call the office for further instructions.

Swelling

Swelling is a normal occurrence after surgery. To minimize swelling apply a cold compress (eg. ice bag or ice pack or an unopened bag of frozen peas or corn) against your cheek, alternating 20 minutes on, then 20 minutes off until bedtime.

Diet

Drink plenty of fluids. Avoid hot liquids or food. Soft food and liquids should be eaten on the day of surgery. Return to a normal diet as soon as possible unless otherwise directed.  Please make every attempt to avoid chewing over the surgical site.

Pain

Start taking pain medication before the anesthetic wears off.  If you continue to have discomfort, continue the medication as prescribed.  If you have additional questions, please contact the office.

Antibiotics

Be sure to take the prescribed antibiotics as directed to help prevent infection.  Unless otherwise advised, the course of antibiotics must be completed.  If you have any concerns or develop side effects please contact the office.

Oral Hygiene

Good oral hygiene is essential to good healing. The day after surgery, the Peridex should be used twice daily; after breakfast and before bed. Be sure to rinse for at least 30 seconds then expectorate. Warm salt water rinses (one teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water) should be used at least 6-8 times a day as well, especially after meals. Brush your teeth as normal, avoiding the surgical site during the initial healing period.

Activity

Keep physical activities to a minimum immediately following surgery. As you begin to get back to your normal routine, gradually increase your level of activity based on how you feel.  Exercising may cause throbbing or bleeding.  If this occurs you should discontinue your activity.  Please remember to maintain hydration.

Wearing your Prosthesis

Partial dentures, flippers, or full dentures, should not be used immediately after surgery, unless advised by your surgeon.
